Grooved metal core illustrationGrooved Metal Gasket with Covering Layers
A grooved metal core gives support; soft covering layers conform to the sealing faces
This gasket has a metal core machined with concentric grooves and covered with a soft sealing material on both faces. The core provides structural strength and transmits the applied load, while the covering layers conform to minor flange surface irregularities. The design is used in piping flanges, equipment joints, and heat exchangers.
- Grooved metal coreGives support and transmits the seating load
- Soft covering layersConform to minor flange surface irregularities
- Centering ringNone, integral or loose centering ring
Features
- The grooved metal core provides structural stability and resistance to extrusion.
- The grooves concentrate sealing contact through the soft covering layers.
- Available without a centering ring, with an integral centering ring, or with a loose centering ring.
- Stainless steel and other alloy cores can be selected according to the medium and service conditions.
- Available for standard flanges and for large-diameter or nonstandard equipment joints made to equipment drawings.

Standards & supply options
- Standard flange constructions to applicable standards including ASME B16.20. Equipment gaskets to drawing, with selectable grooves, covering layers and centering ring configurations.
Typical applications
- Piping flanges in refineries, chemical plants, and power stations.
- Heat exchangers, reactors, pressure vessels, and large-diameter equipment flanges.
- Joints requiring gasket structural stability and load retention.
Selection & service notes
The grooved core and soft covering layers work together to create sealing contact. Selection parameters include flange rigidity, facing condition, bolt load, medium and cyclic duty to match the equipment and assembly conditions.
